This study examines the manifestations and significance of (non)verbal acts in the novel “The Abe’s Family” by Jeon Sang-guk. The main characters, ‘Jinho’ and his mother ‘Jukyung-hee’, exhibit different discourse patterns while selectively engaging in the expression of intent and communication through language and nonverbal acts. Jinho performs verbal acts of disdain and abuse towards his disabled brother ‘Abe’, referring to him as ‘it’ or ‘beast’, a manifestation of self-inflicted abuse and destruction stemming from experiences of scorn and ridicule at school leading to feelings of inferiority. Jukyung-hee, enduring the violent forces of ideology during the June 25th war period and being physically crushed by the US military, chooses silence as a nonverbal act to protect her family and Abe, despite suffering from labor and poverty due to her incompetent husband. However, shortly after immigrating to the United States, Jinho begins to recognize that violent outbursts towards Abe originated from structural issues within history and society upon reading records of US military rape documented by Jukyung-hee, prompting him to search for Abe. This represents a different aspect from Jukyung-hee’s loss of will in expressing intent and communication after immigrating to the US. Abe exists as a representation of the contradictory social structure and simultaneously creates opportunities for ‘ideal’ communication where power dynamics are eschewed.
