This study argued that Good Morning, Mr. Orwell(1984) presents a uniquely Nam June Paik way of organizing various cultural and artistic forms in its form and content, as it was broadcast live via satellite globally. In many ways, it demonstrated Paik’s important role of a “cultural mediator.” Furthermore, the study traced back to the roots of this synthesis. First, Good Morning, Mr. Orwell can be seen as an outgrowth of the artist’s longstanding cooperation with public TV stations such as WGBH-TV and WNET-TV, which began in 1968. Accordingly, this paper explored his association with TV Labs including key related works and texts and the satellite telecast of Documenta 6(1977). It also examined the ways in which Paik’s interests and visions of two-way communication, contingency, real-time, global communication, and diverse cultural exchange were expressed or developed. However, in the 1970s, these interests and elements, which could only be partially realized in each work owing to technological, financial, or national barriers, are finally realized holistically in Good Morning, Mr. Orwell. In this process, Paik leaps from being a “communicator” who works through television to a “cultural mediator/ coordinator” who mediates and coordinates various artistic/technological and material/human resources, and finally, to a kind of “inter-cultural mediator” who mediates the interaction and encounter of various cultures globally.
