포르노그래피의 윤리적인 평가는 시대착오적인가?
이 글의 목적은 오늘날 우리의 삶 속으로 점점 더 깊이 파고드는 포르노그래 피(이하 포르노)를 사회적으로 용인 혹은 기각하는 기준이 될 보편적인 윤리 원 칙의 윤곽을 그려 보는 것이다. 이 시대의 수많은 사람들은 어쩌면 그러한 동기 를 단순히 시대착오적인 것으로 치부하며 진중히 고려할 가치가 없다고 생각할 지 모른다. 이러한 추정의 근거는 대략 세 가지로 압축된다. 논자는 본문에서 포 르노의 윤리적인 평가를 무력화하는 듯 보이는 그 세 가지 시대적 선입관, 즉 포 르노는 ‘기술적인 필연’이라는 생각, 포르노는 ‘표현의 자유’의 영역에 속한다는 생각, 포르노는 ‘무해한 판타지’일 뿐이라는 생각 등을 하나하나 비판적으로 검 토하는 가운데 이 글의 핵심적인 결론인 한 명제에 도달했다. 그것은 적어도 사 물화된 인간들이 주인공인 ‘비인간적 하드코어 포르노’는 다양한 성관계의 모욕 적인 재현을 통해 무수한 남녀의 병적인 관능을 자양하는 ‘존엄의 저격범’ 역할 을 하는 한 윤리적인 비판의 법정에 회부됨이 마땅하다는 것이다. 이를 근거로 논자는 포르노가 성관계에 들어온 두 사람의 평등한 관능의 이야기로, 상호적인 존중과 공감의 서사로 거듭날 때에야 비로소 윤리적인 정당성을 인정받게 될 것 임을 강조했다.
Are the Ethical Evaluations of Pornography Anachronical?
The aim of this essay is to outline a general ethical principle which will serve as the criterion for the social approval or rejection of pornography currently eating more and more deeply into our lives. Nowadays, many people may regard such an ethical motive as being merely anachronical and inconsiderable. This presumption is based on approximately three reasons. In the text, I have critically examined the three prevalent and popular preconceptions about pornography corresponding to those three reasons which seem to invalidate all ethical evaluations of it. The first of them is that pornography is one of contemporary ‘technological necessities.’ The second is that pornography belongs to the domain of ‘freedom of expression.’ The third is that pornography is nothing but a ‘harmless fantasy.’ As a result of this examination, I have reached a core conclusion of this essay that at least, the ‘inhuman hardcore pornography’ which makes its heroes and heroines look like mere things and objects, deserves to be ethically criticized as far as it is functioning as the ‘destroyer of human dignity’ which nourishes the pathological carnality of innumerable men and women through the mechanical and impersonal representation of various sex acts. Based on this conclusion, I have further emphasized that pornography would get to be recognized as being ethically reasonable only if it could transform itself into the human story about the mutual respect and the equal desires of the two persons having sexual intercourse with each other.
