아리스토파네스 이전 구(舊)희극 작품들에 나타난 이상세계(理想世界)에 대한 동경의 의미에 관하여
아리스토파네스 이전에 그리고 그와 동시대에 활동했던 희랍 구희극 작가들 (크라티노스, 크라테스, 텔레클레이데스, 페라크라테스)의 유토피아는 과거, 현재 그리고 미래의 유토피아, 즉 잃어버린 유토피아, 되찾은 유토피아, 그리고 발견될 유토피아의 특징을 내포하고 있다. 구희극 작가들의 작품이 단편으로만 전승되 는 까닭에 그들의 작품 가운데 유토피아적 소망들이 단순한 희망적 관측을 말하 는지 혹은 기존 질서의 변화를 꾀하는 호소를 담고 있는지, 아니면 이상적 소망 에 대한 비판을 내세우고 있는지를 확언할 수는 없다. 또한 그들의 유토피아적 묘사의 의미를 전체적으로 파악하기도 불가능하고, 그들의 저술 의도를 현대적 시각에서 비판하거나 이를 직접적으로 비교하는 것에도 역시 한계가 있는 것이 사실이다. 하지만 구희극 단편들이 담고 있는 이상세계에 대한 동경은 그 당시 살았던 아테네 청중들의 희망과 기대를 담고 있다. 구희극 작가들은 ‘좋은 옛 시 절의 삶’, ‘자동화된 삶’ 그리고 ‘지하세계와 먼 이국 땅에서의 삶’을 통해 관객들 에게 순수한 행복의 세계에로 이끄는 상상력을 부여함으로써 그들이 직면한 일 상의 억압된 현실을 일시적으로나마 잊게 하려고 했던 것이다. 전체적인 면에서 고려해 볼 때 구희극 작가들은 행복한 삶으로 간주되는 지상낙원의 삶은 개연적 이라고 여겼으며, 이상적 묘사는 비생산적이며 비현실적인 것이기에 이를 통해 현실을 희화화하려 했고, 결과적으로 그 모순을 ‘극복하려는’ 혹은 ‘반박하려는’ 희망적 의도를 품었다고 할 수 있다.
On the Meaning of Yearning for the Ideal World before Aristophanes
The Greek old comedies before Aristophanes or in his contemporary poets( Kratinos, Krates, Telekleides, Pherekrates) were addressed to the significance of utopian thought. Its feature was temporal: it was represented as the ideal society lost in the past, the one rediscovered in the present, or the one that will be discovered in the future. However, its depiction fell short of precise analysis partly due to its contents transmitted only as short stories. It has been a heated dispute whether their utopian thoughts would just represent a wishful thinking or not. It is argued that some argue that it was an attempt to transform the existing order, while others contend that it was just an appeal to the ideals. It turns out to be impossible in this sense to comprehend the entire meaning of utopian ideals. It would be also useless to criticize their intentions of works from the contemporary perspective and compare them to ours. It would be fair to say, nevertheless, that the ideal society depicted in the Greek old comedies symbolizes the hopes and expectation of the Athenian audience at that time. They provided the Athenian audience with an opportunity to repose or retreat from oppressive everyday life. Utopia can be made possible by imaging a world of true happiness in the minds of audience. In this respect, the notions of ‘life in good old days’ (bios archaios), ‘automatic life’ (bios automatos), and ‘life in the underworld and foreign countries’ deserve attentions for the appraisal of utopian ideas. It is noteworthy that the old comedy poets didn’t believe the earthly life to be sufficiently happier. The role played by the ideal society was to refute the real society that would be unproductive. Its contradiction can be overthrown by imagining the opposite direction. It would be summarized that the utopian thought in Greek old comedies has referred to as an attempt to ‘refute’ and ‘go beyond’ the earthly life.
