조운 시조에 나타난 알레고리와 형식미학
이 논문은 조운 시조에 나타난 알레고리 기법과 주제의 효과적인 서술을 위해 다양한 장별 분행을 하고 있는 양상을 세부적으로 살폈다. 조운의 작품은 단어 하나를 씀에 있어서도 배치한 것이 아니라 주제와 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있음을 실 제적으로 예증하였다. ｢상치쌈｣이란 작품에서 중장의 “희뜩”이 한 음보로 한 행을 차지하고 있는 점 은 형식을 파괴한 것으로 볼 수도 있지만 이러한 記寫形式이 이 작품을 단순하 게 한 여름날의 시골 정취를 서정적으로 노래한 작품으로만 볼 수 없게 만들고 있음을 주목하였다. 그는 시조 동호회인 추인회(秋蚓會)를 창립하여 이를 이끌기도 했고 각종 강 연회를 주최하고, 갑술구락부(甲戌俱樂部)를 결성하여 회장에 취임하기도 하고 고서전람회, 문학강연회, 무용의 밤, 고전음악의 밤 소인극회 등 각종 문화운동을 주도기도 하면서 매우 바쁘게 지냈을 것이다. 한 몸으로 열 일을 감당해야할 정 도로 바빴을 것이다. 모두 다 돈으로도 해결되지 않은 일이니 오죽 바빴으랴. 먹 고 살기 힘든 시절이었으니 도와줄 일손 하나 변변하지 않았을 것이다. “쥘상치 두손 받쳐/한입에 우겨넣”으며 “눈이 팔려 우긴 채 내다보”는 그에게는 “언제나 흩는 꽃 쫓이던 나비”가 눈에 걸렸던 것은 아닐까. 그래서 자신의 능력으로 모든 것을 다 해결하지 못함을 늘 안타까워했던 온유돈후(溫柔敦厚)한 마음씨를 가지고 있었던 것은 아닐까. 이렇게 보면 아주 단순하게 한 여름날의 시골 정취를 서정 적으로 노래한 작품으로만 보는 것에서 그치지 않고 당대의 사회상을 잘 반영하 고 있는 작품으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 알레고리적 작품이 그의 작품의 많은 비중 을 차지하고 있다.
Allegory and Formal Aesthetics of Jo Un’s Sijo
This study aimed to examine techniques of allegory and splitting lines used for effective narration about a subject in Jo Un’s sijo (a traditional Korean poetic form) in detail. It was also illustrated that the Jo Un did not simply arrange words, but that the arrangement was closely related to the subject of his sijo. In his sijo, titled “Sangchissam (lettuce wraps),” one metre, “희뜩 (meaning “hurriedly”),” forms one line in the middle stanza. This prose style, out of the regular rhythm, makes the sijo more than a lyrical poem about the atmosphere of a countryside on a midsummer day. Jo Un founded and led a poetry society called “Chuinhoi (秋蚓會)” and hosted various lectures. He also organized and chaired a book club called “Gabsulgurakbu (甲戌俱樂部)” and led a variety of cultural movements such as exhibitions of ancient books, literature lectures, nights of dance, nights of classic music, a amateur theatrical society, etc. He must have been very busy doing multiple jobs that cannot be done with money. Furthermore, it was years when people struggled to make ends meet, and thus there must have been not enough people to help him. While he was “holding a lettuce with his two hands (쥘상치 두손 받쳐)” and “cramming it into his mouth (한입에 우겨넣다),” “his eyes were wandering and looking out with his mouth full (눈 이 팔려 우긴 채 내다보니).” His eyes were caught by a “butterfly chasing after a scattered flower (언제나 흩는 꽃 쫓이던 나비).” He must have had a gentle and honest character (溫柔敦厚), always being sad about the reality that he could not handle all of them with his own ability. From this perspective, his sijo is not simply a lyrical poem about the atmosphere of a countryside on a midsummer day, but a literary work that reflects the times well. Jo Un wrote many works using this allegory technique.
