Effects of Home Environmental Stimulation on Children’s Language Proficiency – The Book Report for “Native Speaker” by Chang-Rae Lee

Chang, Min-Hee

Chang-Rae Lee's first novel, “Native Speaker”, explores issues such as the lifestyle of diaspora, and the circumstances surrounding minorities. The key theme of the work is biculturalism (i.e. the conservation of native identity in a foreign culture), as it's vital to understand for those living as diaspora This is reflected in one of the main characters, Henry, as he's caught in between two identities. He can not understand himself, nor his culture, and ultimately fails to belong, despite being an accomplished English speaker living in America. It’s true that foreign speakers may not have good English pronunciation. But when they master their identities, and embrace who they are, that's when their voices truly become heard. Ergo, it’s ideal we focus on the maintenance of Korean culture and language education. As a result, we could have more of an “ethnic identity”, help Koreans to understand their identity, help to realize the differences of and accept American culture, and above all, walk a clear path towards our dreams in creating a more open world.
