The Recognition of Fuse Tatsuji(布施辰治) in Korean Media

Yi, Gyu Soo

In this paper, I investigated how Korea viewed Fuse Tatsuji centering on newspaper articles published in Korea. Mainly focusing on articles reported before and after his visit to Korea, I referred to the relationship between Fuse Tatsuji and Korea and paid attention to the recognition and evaluation of the social movement camps at that time. Fuse Tatsuji is a Japanese human rights lawyer and social activist. After practicing as a lawyer, with the belief of humanitarianism and social equality he tried to protect the rights of farmers and workers in Japan and he involved in various incidents to protect people and their rights in colonies such as Korea and Taiwan. In particular, he related with Korea in various forms. He visited Korea for the first time in 1923 with the help of the ‘Summer Circuit Lecture’ organized by the North Star(北星會) and The Dong-A Ilbo(東 亞日報), and acted as a defense lawyer for the Korea Communist Party. When the Kanto Great Earthquake occurred, he went to investigate and protest against the massacre of the Korean people, and sent letters to each media company saying that he had a huge responsibility for that massacre as a conscientious lawyer. As a lawyer, he practiced the ideology of freedom, equality, and civil rights throughout his life. As recorded in his tombstone, “While you live, with the people and if you have to die, for the people”, Huse acted not only for the Japanese but also for the people of East Asia. The Korean activists respected and valued him as the most trustworthy Japanese. In Japan, the relationship between Fuse Tatsuji and Koreans is regarded as an example of the solidarity struggle between Korea and Japan, and Fuse Tatsuji is remembered as ‘friends’ and ‘comrades’ of the colonial people. Given the humanitarian advocacy and the high interest in colonial people, it is natural that Fuse Tatsuji should be evaluated like this. According to the evaluations of the Koreans, He was the ‘Champion of the Japanese Proletariat Movement.’ The relationship between Fuse Tatsuji and Korea is the mirror of Korea and Japan’s bonding struggle. He would be eternally imprinted as ‘friends and comrades’ for colonial people. He found colonized Korean people, and Korean people found Huse.
