Amid the rapidly changing trends of modern society, many changes occur in the field of higher education. The current direction of university education is also focused on fostering talents with critical thinking ability that can solve a given problem by collecting information, analyzing and reconstructing it beyond simple knowledge transfer. The situation of foreign students attending Korean universities, however, can be characterized by a lack of academic communication chances that impair their academic performance. Foreign students hardly have the opportunity to develop their logical and critical thinking and it is difficult for them to express themselves in Korean. In this study, we would like to diagnose that the basic education courses of domestic universities for foreign students should ultimately seek ways to foster “critic thinking ability,” a more advanced activity, including “the ability to think,” and we propose “Project Based Learning(PBL)” as the most efficient and desirable teaching-learning method to realize it. PBL has the effect of raising students' interest in learning and motivation to learn through presenting problems that are closely related to life, thereby increasing their participation and achievement in classes and improving their ability to solve problems in real life. PBL implies the possibility of developing critical thinking in the entire process of presenting and analyzing problems, and drawing up solutions. There are good reasons to conclude that reflecting and practicing PBL will help promote the academic communication ability of foreign students, and ultimately improve their academic competence at universities.
