The purpose of this study is to investigate what conflicts the modern Korean society went through and what discourse of social integration was reflected in literary art under these conflicts. The study focused on finding the spirit of the times and social consciousness in several pioneering discourses that awakened people to the spirit of tolerance and integration during the modern transition period and Japanese rule. The Independence Newspaper by the Independence Club provided a venue where people engaged in the collective communication of their modern consciousness. It accepted various types of journalism to awaken people to the awareness of modern social participation. It was the starting point of progressive consciousness based on glocalism in the nation. Literary activities by Ahn Hwak and Han Yong-woon hold significance as a window to arouse the uniqueness and consciousness of the Korean people. At the transitional phase to modern times, arts made a contribution to the popular integration of society, modern consciousness, and enhancement of modern citizenship. The present study presented an experimental discussion to examine the tolerance and integration will of the Korean society through modern literary activities, holding significance as a priori foundation to look into the spirit of tolerance and integration in the contemporary Korean society after its liberation.
