『생쥐와 인간』에 나타난 도덕적 딜레마와 책임
존 스타인벡은 도덕적인 딜레마에 직면한 개인이 무엇에 근거하여 판단을 내 리고 행동해야 하는가에 대한 문제를 끊임없이 탐색한다. 그는 생쥐와 인간에 서 두 명의 떠돌이 노동자인 조지와 레니의 경험을 모든 인간의 경험으로 확대시 킨다. 그들은 새로운 농장에서 일자리를 얻지만, 그들이 다른 평범한 일꾼들과 다른 점은 그들이 땅과 농장에 대한 꿈을 공유하고 있다는 것이다. 그러나 이 책 의 원래 제목이 “우연히 일어난 것”처럼, 그들의 계획은 의도한대로 이루어지지 않고 예기치 않은 결과를 초래한다. 이 책의 마지막 부분에서 조지가 레니를 직 접 죽이면서 그들의 꿈은 사라지지만 책임의 주제가 강하게 드러난다. 스타인벡 은 단지 농장에서 일어난 일들을 사실적으로 묘사하면서 복잡한 도덕적 딜레마 에 빠진 개인이 어떤 선택을 해야 하는가에 대한 물음을 던지며 책임감과 도덕적 인 선택의 중요성을 강조한다.
Moral Dilemmas and Responsibility in Of Mice and Men
John Steinbeck constantly explores what forms the basis for an individual’s decisions and actions when faced with moral dilemmas. In Of Mice and Men, he extends the experiences of George Milton and Lennie Small to all human experience. They get a job on a new farm, but their distinction from other workers is that they share a dream to own their own land and farm. However, as the original title of the book is “Something That Happened,” their plans do not go as intended and result in unexpected consequences. At the end of the book, as George kills Lenny himself, their dreams disappear, but the theme of responsibility is strongly revealed. Steinbeck not only simply portrays what happened on a farm, but also asks what choices an individual faced with complicated moral dilemmas has to make, while emphasizing the importance of responsibility and moral choice.
